2024 - CATCHING LIGHT

Once, a girl lived in a little house in the forest behind a mountain. She spent her days playing in the woods, climbing trees and playing pretend. This little girl fell in love with the sunlight for its golden comfort; as the last rays disappeared each night, she pondered how to capture it and keep its warmth forever.

She asked the moon, and the moon smiled back but offered no solution. She asked the birds that sang longingly each dusk and dawn. She asked the soft land that unfolded its greenery each dewy morning, but there was no clear answer. She curled up close to the fire in the cold night and whispered, “How do you catch the light?”

The fire crackled warmly, “With shadows, my dear, with shadows.” The girl watched as the shadows danced along the room’s walls, against her skin and in her heart, as she finally understood.

SECRET KEEPER

120 x 60 cm

Secrets are woven with the same

delicate nature as lace.

Handed down from mother to daughter

like precious garments.

Each fold of this skirt holds a memory,

a longing embrace

If I ever have a daughter

I will pass on this heritage of fabric.

For her to embroider

A new narrative

So one day we may all be set free.

This is a portrait of my childhood best friend dressed in my mother's wedding skirt, dancing in the woods where we ran wild as girls.

SMALL SACRIFICE

40 x 80 cm

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it,

does it make a sound?

It echoes with the same resonance as a brave heart breaking.

lAYING WITH WOLVES

80 x 120 cm

As a girl, I used to have a recurring dream that wolves would surround my house, and I could not escape. A pack lived on the mountain behind us; I would often hear them howl into the endless nights of the Canadian winter. The terrifying sounds chilled deeper than the wind or snow.

Now, the sounds fills me with joy and a sense of wildness. When I feel lonely living far away, I think of those wolves, throw my head back and smile, remembering home.

THE LAND WHISPERS YOUR NAME WHILE YOU SLEEP

80 x 120 cm

There is a secret love language between the sunlight and the ground

When the warmth reaches the cold, dark earth,

it explodes with life

Complicated symbiotic relationships are unfolding and growing all around us

If you are very quiet,

you can hear them communicating

When I was a girl,

the land used to call my name

This memory is embedded as sharply in mind

as the scars from summer black berry scratches are etched into my skin

I will never forget

I am simply a small piece of that place

FINDING THE LIGHT - LIKE A MOTH TO A FLAME

120 X 60 cm

There is a quiet power

Moving with grace through the valley

The unseen world is a dark undertow

Softly tugging at the hem of your coat

Whispering “Slow Down”

Maybe we are just like the forest

The perfect balance

Decomposition and growth

Fazes interlocked

In a sequential pattern

Eternally

FEMINITY IS A STATE OF MIND

69 x 80 cm

Wake up every day

so unapologetically yourself

The world has no choice

but to surrender to

your beauty

your desire

your radiance

your grace

Carve a space out like water

Smoothing over even the sharpest stones

FIND ME UNDER THE LUNAR RAINBOW

60 x 42 cm

While we were chasing stars

She caught the moon

Wielding it’s power

To heal the world around us

ALL MY LOVE SENT ON A CLOUD

TO THE MOON

42 x 60 cm

Sometimes we love something out of our grasp

Growing is in the reaching

Crumbling is a part of the process

To the moon and back

Forever

FORWARD MOTION

120 x 80 cm

Can we be in two places

at the same time?

An old version and a new

tied together

like the invisible string which binds me

to you

to that place

it runs through me like the creek

my blood

kin

Even across the ocean

it pulls me in

close to your magic

We must step forward

to take a new form

GROWING PAINS

69 x 80  cm

There is sanctity in submission,

knowing I am only as tall

as I once was small

only as brave

as I have been afraid

If pain is my greatest teacher

then I choose love as my weapon

Expanding this human form

to the ends of the earth

SHADOW DANCING

90 x 120 cm

How do you catch the light?

“With shadows my dear,

with shadows.”

Late at night

With both arms in the air

Dancing

Between the light and dark

With grace
